About

“THE DOG NOBODY WANTED … Until Now.” This is Nico. A gentle giant… but life didn’t start gently for him. Before he came to us, Nico had already having several different homes. several times someone decided he was too big… too difficult… too much. Ten times someone gave up. By the time we met him, NEico was just 10 months old and already broken by the world. We were contacted by a foster family who were caring for him temporarily, but they needed to leave for medical treatment. When we arrived to meet Nico, we found him cowering in the corner, tail tightly tucked between his legs. A big dog… trying to make himself invisible. We offered him treats. He wouldn’t come near us. His eyes told the whole story: fear, confusion, and a lifetime of rejection in such a short life. But we couldn’t leave him there. So Nico climbed into the back seat of the truck with Derek. The whole journey home he just sat silently looking out of the window, not moving, not knowing what was coming next. When we arrived at the sanctuary, we didn’t rush him. We simply opened the gate to the garden and introduced one dog. A cautious sniff. A small twitch of the tail. Then another dog. And another. Soon Nico was surrounded by dogs running around him while he stood there unsure what to do. Then something incredible happened… His tail lifted. Not tucked in fear anymore. It lifted… and slowly started to wag. We could see it in his eyes — he wanted to join them. So we unclipped his harness and stepped back… ready just in case. And suddenly… Nico ran. The other dogs chased him. He chased them. For the first time in his life, he wasn’t the dog being passed around from home to home. He was just a dog… playing. We sent a video to Help Fuerteventura, who had him registered from when he was a puppy. When they saw the footage they said something that stayed with us: “We’ve never seen Nico with his tail up.” Not once. That day changed everything. After seeing how happy he was, they signed Nico over to us and said they never thought he would get a happy ending. But he did. The scared puppy who once bit out of fear is now a 2-year-old fun-loving dog who runs around the sanctuary like he’s always belonged here. And that’s the thing about rescue… Sometimes animals just need one place that refuses to give up on them. At Hearts Animal Sanctuary, Nico is just one of many animals whose lives have been turned around through patience, love, and time. But rescues like Nico come with a cost. Food, vets, bedding, medicine, fencing, and care for horses, dogs, cats, goats, birds and more. We receive no government funding. Everything we do is only possible because people like you decide to help. If Nico’s story touched you, please consider making a small donation. Because the next Nico is still out there… waiting for someone to give them a chance. ❤️🙏 Please donate if you can… and if you can’t, please share. Sharing Nico’s story might help the next animal find their happy ending.
